DIY project makes it impossible to lose the remote

Ever come home from a long day at work only to discover that the TV remote is missing? I feel your pain. Nothing peeves me more than wanting to kick back and watch a little tube, but then discovering I need to go on a search-and-rescue mission for the remote. Sure you can try to remember to put back the remote when done watching the television, or you could get one of those high tech remote tracking devices, but how about this for an idea?

Here is a low-tech solution to the age old problem of the lost remote. Just take a piece of railroad track, weld a chain onto that and then attach the other end to a brace with the remote firmly secured inside. Viola! No more lost remote.

What a simple idea. And yet, I strongly suspect this project was inspired by a few gas station restroom keys I’ve seen in the past. Although, I guess you could still potentially even lose this remote, but I imagine it wouldn’t get very far and think of the upper body workout you would get in the process.

Nokia phone to use Maemo software

The Nokia N900 handset will run on Maemo software previously found in Internet tablet devices, and it plans to use the technology in other high-end models.
The model lets customers multitask and browse more easily than previous smartphones, the Espoo, Finland, company said in a statement. The touchscreen-and-qwerty device will cost about $713 without subsidies and ship in its first markets in October, Nokia said.

Nokia has used Maemo since 2005 in touchscreen tablets wihtout built-in phone functions. The system is based on Linux open-source software, which may help Nokia attract developers in competition with Google’s Android, which is also based on Linux, and Apple’s iPhone.

Nokia N9000 is a 'computer-grade' handset

Set to pander to the needs of multitasking mobile users everywhere, and building on the back of Nokia’s previous generations of Internet Tablet technology, the N9000 runs on new Maemo 5 software and will be able to handle dozens of open application windows simultaneously – much as if it were a conventional desktop.

Specs wise, you'll find a 2.5GHz dual-core E5200 processor, 320GB hard drive, 4GB of memory and Vista Home Premium (64-bit). There's also an 8x DVD burner, 2 megapixel webcam, WiFi, gigabit Ethernet, Intel's G4500HD graphics, a wireless remote and a panel that's either WXGA or 1,920 x 1,200, depending on which version of the rundown you read. At any rate, it's up for order as we speak for a buck under $1,000.

NEC new high-end 24-inch MultiSync monitors

NEC's offerings or as jaw-dropping as some others, but the company's new MultiSync LCD2490WUXi² and LCD2490W2-BK-SV displays will no doubt be just the ticket for at least a few graphics professionals out there. From the looks of it, the two 24-inch monitors are mostly identical, and pack an IPS panel with a 1,900 x 1,200 resolution, along with a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 320 cd/m² brightness, 96.7% coverage of the sRGB color space, and NEC's AmbiBright ambient light sensor with automatic backlight adjustment. The big difference is that the LCD2490W2 model comes bundled with NEC's SpectraView color calibration sensor and, of course, a slightly higher price tag. Look for it to run you $1,299, while the SpectraView-less LCD2490WUXi² will set you back $1,099.

A-DATA's the slimmest portable HDD this world

Now, A-DATA's claims that its NH92 is indeed the slimmest portable HDD this world has ever seen. Still, with a case that's just 12 millimeters thick and 5.36 ounces, we'd wager that this one won't be weighing you down. The all-aluminum chassis contains a single 2.5-inch drive ranging from 250GB to 500GB in size, comes in the delightful array of colors you see pictured above and sports heretofore undisclosed prices.

Well, call it old technology, but it does have its niche. The compact candybar handset will feature its own QWERTY keyboard to help you get those text messages and email out in double quick time. Not only that, it will cater to either gender with Impulsive Pink and Deep Blue colors, and with threaded text messaging, it will be much easier to keep track of your conversations each time an email or text message comes in. For folks who can’t live with emoticons, there is a dedicated emoticon key that makes it a snap to insert smiley faces and other symbols into their text messages and emails.

Heck, to make the entire graduation a much more fun affair, why not purchase two SCP-2700’s for free (both mom and daughter can get one apiece to help them keep in touch about the latest in fashion as well as boyfriend advice across a long distance once the “little girl” grows up and leaves the nest) as long as they’re new-line activations and tied down to a two-year service agreement on two Individual Plans with messaging, or a Family Plan with messaging.

HD Pocket camcorders shooting 720p when word comes of a model that has a Pico projector built in for instant projection of home movies. Yeah, that’s right, now you can shoot vacation videos and bore your friends in real time by projecting them anywhere!

Digilife is the same of the company and their new DDV-JF1 shoots 720p at 30 frames per second, or 848×480 at 60 fps, or postage sized 320×240 at 30 fps. Video which can be watched on its 2 ½ inch LCD screen or by the 640×260 pico projector. The Pico Projector first made headlines in 2006 and was heralded as an ideal business option for smart phones and pocket presentations while on the road. But this is the first time we’ve seen it as an option for a camcorder. And there’s a good reason for that. Battery life. The Pico Projection option will kill batteries of an average pocket camcorder in nothing flat, and with a size of 640×260, you won’t be watching movies on a sheet hung on the wall any time soon. Still though, it’s an awesome idea that could catch on if the power and brightness issues can be addressed.

Clevo TN70M UMPC gets checked out in the UK

Clevo's TN70M touchscreen little 7-inch UMPC / netbook has just made its way to the UK, and UMPC Portal's gotten its hands on some shots of the little guy. The netbook boasts a 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520 CPU, a full QWERTY keyboard, a webcam, and a fingerprint reader, and is available with either XP or Vista operating systems. Clevo -- a company better known for its hulking gaming rigs -- has been pretty mum on whether the TN70M willl make its way to other shores as of yet, but it's retailing for about $520, and we'll keep our eyes peeled for you.

WiPC? Because there is apparently a need for wireless mobile broadband devices, that’s why. Okay, that joke didn’t really work, but who wouldn’t want “access to Internet-based information and entertainment content as well as voice, data, and video communications”.

Of course, one of the limitations to the WiPC or any MID is that tiny screen to surf the net with. Fortunately, this WiPC has a high-resolution color liquid crystal micro display, and superior magnifying optics coupled with some video technology can create a “virtual 15 inch image”. I’m not certain how that is possible to enlarge that image of that size.

Still, you’ve got to admire the miniaturization process that BlueRadios has accomplished. According to the company president and CEO Mark Kramer, they have reduced a typical 5 pound laptop down to 3 ounces. Not bad.

This product will be available to “OEMs and large consumer electronics distributors with advanced operating systems such as Windows, Android, or Linux”. It can also support Bluetooth 3.5G, WiFi, and GPS.

The Coby MP3 Player with 1GB Flash Memory and Speaker System

The Coby MP3 Playerit offers a 1GB flash memory combined with a stereo speaker system. It’ll play MP3 and WMA music files. Although 1GB isn’t much, there are likely those out there that really don’t need something with a lot of storage. Plus the smaller drives are better for taking around with you to the gym or other places when you need extreme portability. It doesn’t come with a set of earbuds, but at least you’ll have a set of speakers. The speakers can hook up to anything with a 3.5mm stereo plug.

Best Buy to Sell Palm Pre Phones Starting with June 7

It looks like Palm’s Pre will be available from Best Buy starting with June 7. Should we all just assume that Sprint will also start selling the device around the same date? As for the prices, word on the street is that Best Buy will sell the Pre for $199.99 for new customers when they choose a 2-year plan, $299.99 for upgrades and an astounding $999.99 for unsubsidized phones. We’ll just have to wait and see if anyone will confirm all that!

Nokia 5800 magically starts working on 3G

Olde NAM 5800 XpressMusic today, and the weirdest thing happened: it worked on 3G. This comes after a day of frustration trying to get it hooked up to UMTS yesterday -- a sentiment echoed by several others who took the plunge. The only theory we can come up with is that we were in Chicago yesterday at the Nokia flagship store -- a place where many of the "defective" units were sold -- and today we're elsewhere, so it's conceivable that there's an issue with AT&T's 3G network in Chicago. We've noticed an uptick in 3G loss on other devices in Chicago the past few days, so it's possible that the 5800 is just particularly sensitive to crappy networks; then again, there seem to be others in New York that have the same issue, so it's anybody's guess. All we know for sure is that we're showing a big, fat "3.5G" logo in the upper left corner of our unit at the moment -- and we're going to cross our fingers that it stays that way.

Dell Latitude XT2

Dell's Latitude XT2 convertible was leaked to us way back in March,and although it missed that planned November ship date, it's suddenly showed up in an absolute downpour of documentation -- great news if you didn't have any light reading for the weekend. We did a nice heavy skimming of the material for you, and spec-wise, it's basically just the expected bump up to Montevina: an unspecified ULV Core 2 Duo on an 800MHz bus with integrated Intel GMA X4500 graphics, up to 5GB of DDR3 RAM and the same 12.1-inch multitouch-capable capacitive touchscreen as in the original. (Hellooo Windows 7!)

Alesis iPod JamDock

The pro audio-minded rack mixer, and the ProTrack dock / portable digital recorder, you'd think they'd have all their bases covered -- but that's clearly not the case. Among the many goodies making the scene at this year's NAMM, JamDock is aimed at musicians who want to incorporate iPod audio into their performance.

This bad boy sports two 1/4-inch inputs that support both line level and high impedance instruments, 1/4-inch monitor outs, and a single 1/4-inch stereo out for headphones. It can be mounted on a drum rack or stand using the e-percussion Module Mount (sold separately). Pricing and availability have yet to be announced. In the meantime, it looks like bedroom musicians will be stuck jamming to the Miami Vice theme on their boomboxes, just like nature intended.
