Olympus was the first of the lot to bring Micro Four Thirds system to the world, followed by Panasonic and then Samsung with its own mirrorless SLR system. As one of the largest electronics company in the world, it’s only fair that Sony also want to tap into the large compact user crowd and this it did with unveiling of its highly anticipated Sony NEX range of mirrorless SLRs. Using Sony’s proprietary interchangeable lens system in a body as small as its Cyber-shot range, Sony has managed to roll out the world’s smallest mirrorless SLR ever.


I don’t know about you, but I’ve been waiting for something like this since its prototype was unveiled a few months ago. The NEX-3 was introduced alongside its sibling, the NEX-5 and the main differences are their bodies and that the NEX-5 shoots in 1080iP. The NEX-3 is built with polycarbonate body while the NEX-5 has a magnesium alloy body.

To be honest, I really like the NEX-3, firstly because it also comes in white and red whereas the NEX-5 only comes in silver. The review unit I got comes with the 18-200mm lens and 16mm F2.8 pancake lens. I find that the pancake lens does an awesome job of wide shots up-close while the zoom lens gives you more control over creative shots. The NEX series acts as a ‘bridge’ to DSLRs for compact users and it comes with shooting tips to optimize photography results.

The only gripe I had was with the auto focus, which couldn’t ‘lock’ onto the subject if you half press and release the shutter the second time. This not only happens with the Sony NEX-3 but for most mirrorless compacts as well, I find.

With HDR mode, Sweep Panorama, Anti Motion Blur and many other artistic effects for creative, edgy look, the NEX-3 is never short of capabilities and it goes beyond just point-and-shoot. It incorporates the simplicity and size of a compact but uses the performance and capabilities of a DSLR. Personally, I was contemplating to get a DSLR but after just one-night with the NEX-3, I realize that this too can be a complement or possible replacement for DSLRs in the future.

Samsung NV11

The Samsung NV11 completely forgoes conventional controls and instead uses Samsung's Smart Touch interface, found on every NV-series camera except last year's MP3-playing NV3. Instead of a joy pad or touch screen, the NV11 uses a series of touch sensor buttons along the bottom and right of its 2.7-inch screen to navigate its various menus and settings. Slide a finger along the sensors to page through the camera's grid-like menu system. Once the cursor is over your menu selection, just press the touch sensor down like a button to confirm it. With its rows of unmarked button/sensors, Smart Touch may seem intimidating at first. After a bit of practice, however, it becomes very intuitive, and makes accessing any of the camera's myriad settings quite easy.

Smart Touch isn't perfect, however, and it suffers from two major flaws. First, the sensor buttons sit too close to each other, and large-fingered users will find themselves often accidentally hitting the sensor next to the one they wanted to touch. Second, while the sensors make navigating a menu grid quite easy, they're extremely awkward for paging through dozens of photos, or any other action that requires a menu slider. When looking at photos, navigating a zoomed-in picture, or adjusting manual focus, you must either stroke the touch sensor repeatedly in one direction, or stroke it once and keep your finger pressed on the last sensor to keep the cursor scrolling.

Besides its 10-megapixel sensor and 38 to 190mm-equivalent, f/2.8-4.4 5x optical Schneider zoom lens, the NV11 comes loaded with several high-end camera features. The camera offers full manual exposure controls, with Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual modes. As mentioned earlier, you can easily access manual focus in any of those modes and change your focus distance by sliding your finger over the touch sensor. While it doesn't have any manual or optical image stabilization, the NV11 offers Samsung's Advanced Shake Reduction to help reduce blur by boosting ISO sensitivity and shutter speed when shooting zoomed in or under low light.

160-megapixel digital camera

What are the most important features of a camera for you? At present compact, multifunctional and stylish digital cameras are generally considered as the best ones. All these three features serve as the main criteria while someone is choosing which one he/she should buy. However, some companies trying to invent a high-end device neglect some of these criteria. Do you pay much attention to pixels while choosing a camera? Do you believe that the more pixels a camera has the better will be the quality of photos?

Seitz company, for example, created a 160-megapixel 6 x 17 inch camera that is considered to have the highest resolution among all the digital cameras. In addition to the fact that this gadget looks huge it is probably heavy to carry and shoot with. Apparently one full resolution image taken with this Seitz camera will take up approximately 900MB. So a simple memory card won't be enough for you to make even a few photos.

The Seitz D3 Digital Camera impresses not only with its sizes (6 x 17, 4.5 lb), but also with its features. This gadget takes pictures with resolution of 7,500 x 21,250 pixels, that is to say 160 MP. The Seitz D3 Digital Camera is combined with a tablet PC, which works with it, making the whole process easier and more reliable in service. But in case you really like extremely high resolution image be ready to buy a portable hard drive for this purpose. Nevertheless, that's not the half of it. Such a high-end gadget costs about $ 45,000.

Of course it's great that now you have the possibility to possess this high resolution camera. Yet I'm sure that there is hardly someone who really needs this stuff. Moreover its price is so high that just quite a limited number of people can afford it. As a result I would like to say that to buy this gadget means to make one of the most irrational purchases in the world.
