Sony NEX-3 Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Cameras

Sony NEX-3 Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Cameras

Olympus was the first of the lot to bring Micro Four Thirds system to the world, followed by Panasonic and then Samsung with its own mirrorless SLR system. As one of the largest electronics company in the world, it’s only fair that Sony also want to tap into the large compact user crowd and this it did with unveiling of its highly anticipated Sony NEX range of mirrorless SLRs. Using Sony’s proprietary interchangeable lens system in a body as small as its Cyber-shot range, Sony has managed to roll out the world’s smallest mirrorless SLR ever.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been waiting for something like this since its prototype was unveiled a few months ago. The NEX-3 was introduced alongside its sibling, the NEX-5 and the main differences are their bodies and that the NEX-5 shoots in 1080iP. The NEX-3 is built with polycarbonate body while the NEX-5 has a magnesium alloy body.

To be honest, I really like the NEX-3, firstly because it also comes in white and red whereas the NEX-5 only comes in silver. The review unit I got comes with the 18-200mm lens and 16mm F2.8 pancake lens. I find that the pancake lens does an awesome job of wide shots up-close while the zoom lens gives you more control over creative shots. The NEX series acts as a ‘bridge’ to DSLRs for compact users and it comes with shooting tips to optimize photography results.

The only gripe I had was with the auto focus, which couldn’t ‘lock’ onto the subject if you half press and release the shutter the second time. This not only happens with the Sony NEX-3 but for most mirrorless compacts as well, I find.

With HDR mode, Sweep Panorama, Anti Motion Blur and many other artistic effects for creative, edgy look, the NEX-3 is never short of capabilities and it goes beyond just point-and-shoot. It incorporates the simplicity and size of a compact but uses the performance and capabilities of a DSLR. Personally, I was contemplating to get a DSLR but after just one-night with the NEX-3, I realize that this too can be a complement or possible replacement for DSLRs in the future.

The B-Series : Sony Walkman Players

The B-Series
ony may not ever beat out the iPod, but they are still in the portable music game. In fact, this isn’t the first time we have covered Sony’s new Walkman series, but last time, we only had a little information and no picture of the B-Series.

As you can see, the B-Series is a capsule shaped wonder that looks a lot like your typical USB flash drive. That is because the end of the B-Series is designed to pop off to reveal a USB port for some Plug-and-Play action.

The MP3 player is designed with an FM tuner, and has a quick charge function. Unfortunately, I have heard from my sources that the battery life is not long. I have also heard that the display screen is incredible tiny, as you might be able to see.

Sony Xplod in-car CD receivers with USB

Sony has pulled the covers off two new Xplod in-car CD receivers, the CDX-GT920U and CDX-GT620U. Support for CD and radio is a given, but they also have USB ports for playing music stored on memory sticks and Sony’s Quick BrowZer technology to speed tracklist navigation. Both have fold-down, removable face-plates, which in the GT920U’s case is motorized.
Sony has fitted front mounted mini-jacks for plugging in other audio sources, and the GT920U is also compatible with iPods, HD and satellite radio (albeit with accessories required). MP3, non-DRM AAC and non-DRM WMA files are supported, both on CD or memory stick. Power output for both units rates at 52 watts x 4, with three additional pre-outs.

EX2 Body-Sonic Vibration Phone

EX2 Body-Sonic
Naon has launched its new 2.2 sonic body-vibration headset called the EX2. The EX2 can deliver both normal sounds (for the outer ear) and body-sonic vibration (for the inner ear). You can even control the bone-conduction sound and vibration so you can find that "sweet spot" in listening music through headset that you've always been looking for. Originally released in Japan where it sold 200,000 units, the EX2 headset costs US$45.

Sony unveils BRAVIA W4000-Series LCD HDTVs

Sony unveils BRAVIA W4000-Series LCD HDTVs
Sony's unloaded a nice foursome today with its all new (but eerily familiar) W4000-Series lineup. Available in 32-, 40-, 46- and 52-inch sizes, the newest members of the BRAVIA family all feature a 1080p resolution, Picture Frame Mode, BRAVIA Engine 2, BRAVIA Sync, XMB, 24p True Cinema, USB Photo Viewer, 178-degree viewing angles, a built-in DVB-T tuner, VGA port and a trio of HDMI connectors for good measure. The 32-incher gets stripped down a bit with the omission of Live Color Creation, a 10-bit panel, PhotoTV HD, and x.v.Color -- all of which are included on the larger models. Unfortunately, Sony's keeping quiet with regard to pricing / availability, but we'd certainly keep an eye out for any strange new shelf inhabitants over in Europe.

OLED

Possibly buoyed by margins produced by its $2500 XEL-1, Sony is pumping 22-billion yen ($203.5 million) into scaling OLED production technology up to medium and large panels. No word on what sort of sizes are meant by "medium" and "large," but we're hoping that "medium" comes in around 30-inches and "large" runs upwards of the 45-inch mark. Competition being what it is, Sony probably hopes so, too. With OLED lifetimes on the rise, the only thing that keeps these power-miserly, high-contrast, great color and wide-viewing angle displays out of a home theater setup is sheer size. Given the race between manufacturers, we're hoping to see falling prices, rising sizes and shorter times to market.
