DIY project makes it impossible to lose the remote

 remote

Ever come home from a long day at work only to discover that the TV remote is missing? I feel your pain. Nothing peeves me more than wanting to kick back and watch a little tube, but then discovering I need to go on a search-and-rescue mission for the remote. Sure you can try to remember to put back the remote when done watching the television, or you could get one of those high tech remote tracking devices, but how about this for an idea?

Here is a low-tech solution to the age old problem of the lost remote. Just take a piece of railroad track, weld a chain onto that and then attach the other end to a brace with the remote firmly secured inside. Viola! No more lost remote.

What a simple idea. And yet, I strongly suspect this project was inspired by a few gas station restroom keys I’ve seen in the past. Although, I guess you could still potentially even lose this remote, but I imagine it wouldn’t get very far and think of the upper body workout you would get in the process.

Nokia phone to use Maemo software

The Nokia N900 handset will run on Maemo software previously found in Internet tablet devices, and it plans to use the technology in other high-end models.
The model lets customers multitask and browse more easily than previous smartphones, the Espoo, Finland, company said in a statement. The touchscreen-and-qwerty device will cost about $713 without subsidies and ship in its first markets in October, Nokia said.

Nokia has used Maemo since 2005 in touchscreen tablets wihtout built-in phone functions. The system is based on Linux open-source software, which may help Nokia attract developers in competition with Google’s Android, which is also based on Linux, and Apple’s iPhone.

Nokia N9000
Set to pander to the needs of multitasking mobile users everywhere, and building on the back of Nokia’s previous generations of Internet Tablet technology, the N9000 runs on new Maemo 5 software and will be able to handle dozens of open application windows simultaneously – much as if it were a conventional desktop.

The compact but “computer-grade” N9000 will be looking to flex its muscle thanks to the inclusion of a powerful ARM Cortex-A8 processor, up to 1GB of application memory, 32GBs of data storage (expandable to 48GBs via microSD), OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration, and a capable 5.0 mega pixel digital camera.

The handset also takes advantage of high-speed cellular connectivity (10/2 HSPA and WLAN), a Mozilla-powered Web browser, and will come complete with a high-resolution WVGA touchscreen user interface, a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, support for Adobe Flash 9.4, and widget and application personalisation.

Attached to a potentially pocket-testing retail price of €500 Euro (excluding taxes and subsidies), the new Nokia N9000 is expected to hit stores this coming October and will be debuted at next week’s Nokia World event in Stuttgart, Germany.

The USB Boomb

 USB Boomb

Do you want boomb to kill someone? Here the USB boomb (just kidding :)) designed by Joel Escalona, who reminds people too ignorant to figure it out themselves, that this drive was meant to sit on a desk, not be carried around. You might get into a bit of trouble if you were casually carrying this through a crowded area. Which one would think might be common sense, but it would be dangerous to assume that. Sadly it’s just a design as of now, so you’ll just have to wait and see if it ever becomes a real live product.

New Sony VRD-MC6 DVDirect DVD recorder

Sony VRD-MC6 DVDirect DVD recorder

A new DVD recorder in the form of the VRD-MC6 - the next generation multi-function DVDirect DVD recorder which is touted to transfer both high-definition and standard-definition home videos and digital photos to DVD discs without the need for a computer acting as a middleman. What makes the new VRD-MC6 model so special? While we’re going to look at it in further detail right after the jump, let me share with you an open secret - the device comes with a 2.7″ color LCD display that is handy for previewing video files, and you can also use it to check out up to half a dozen digital photos simultaneously. In addition, the wonders of modern technology and miniaturization has made it nearly 60% smaller compared to its predecessor.

According to Shige Nakayama, manager of the DVDirect business at Sony, “Many customers still have their old home movies on tapes and are looking for an easy solution to archive their personal digital imaging content on DVD discs. With the larger built-in LCD color screen in a smaller body, the new DVDirect model makes it easier for customers to transfer the content to DVD discs for archiving, enjoying and sharing with family and friends.” The VRD-MC6 is able to transfer AVCHD quality videos to DVD discs in their native 1080i HD resolution when hooked directly to a Sony hard drive or Memory Stick media-based Handycam camcorder - surely you didn’t expect anything less than that from Sony! AVCHD quality DVDs can also be played back on compatible Blu-ray Disc devices, and these will include other players, computer optical drives and PS3 consoles.

Solar Power LED Vintage Camping

Solar Power LED Vintage Camping Lantern

This camping light features a vintage look, so you can feel like you’re using an old lamp. However, it uses solar power to keep the LEDs burning brightly, instead of running on the same thing a vintage lamp would run on. It’s definitely the best of both worlds, old look and new technology.

Although the lamp is shown in the bright red shown here, once you get to reading through the product page you’ll discover a brief mention that the lamp is actually jet black instead of red. The lamps use 2 AA batteries. If for some reason the solar panel does not receive 4-6 hours of the sunlight it needs to charge, you can pop in a couple of regular batteries to run the 7 LED lights.

Pioner Elite A/V Receivers add new dimension in home entertainment

Pioner Elite A/V Receivers add new dimension in home entertainment

Pioneer’s back into its groove not with another GPS navigation system for vehicles or DVD/Blu-ray player, but this time round they aim to raise the bar (and seem to have done so successfully by the time you reach the end of the post) with their new range of high powered A/V receivers, where the quartet of these are targeted to enhance clarity, detail and dynamic “quick response” from uncompressed Dolby True-HD and DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks that can be found in Blu-ray Disc entertainment. For instance, the all-new Pioneer Elite SC-25 and SC-27 A/V Receivers do feature a Direct Energy HD Class D amplifier that boasts ICEPower technology to ensure unprecedented reproduction of high resolution multi-channel, stereo as well as compressed audio and provide premium home entertainment that would even fool some into thinking that they’re at a movie theater. As for the Elite SC-27, this model will leverage the full advantages of this emerging amplification technology, as it holds the position of being the industry’s first Class D amp design to achieve THX Ultra Plus and AIR Studio monitor certifications.

Entertainment purists will definitely be more pleased than punch to find out that the SC-25 and SC-27 utilize Burr-Brown analog to digital converters (ADC) and renowned Wolfson digital to analog converters (DAC), working in tandem to maintain high resolution performance throughout the entire digital signal processing chain from input to output. DAC performance is further brought to another level with the SC-27 as it boasts a professional-grade Burr-Brown 192kHz / 24-Bit sampling rate converter (SRC) for ultra-wide dynamic range and advanced jitter reduction. Guess all of your recently purchased Michael Jackson records are going to sound even better on this, just make sure you have a well defined room to maximize the effect of the audio output.

The other two models would be the Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH and VSX-23TXH that are lower end and yet pack a punch with its Direct Energy Class A/B amplification, integrated video signal conversion, 1080p video scaling and an abundance of connectivity solutions for current and new high definition as well as standard definition entertainment sources. The Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH and VSX-23TXH will begin shipping sometime from this month onwards for $700 and $900, respectively, while the Pioneer Elite SC-25TXH and SC-27 will ship out next month for $1,700 and $2,000, respectively.

JVC UX-LP5 Hi-Fi with iPod Dock

JVC UX-LP5 Hi-Fi with iPod Dock

This 30 Watt, two channel Hi-Fi has a total power output of 70 watts with its twin speakers, and has a CD Player, AM/FM radio tuner, and it its compatible with MP3 and WMA audio files. There is also a USB port for accessing other files as well.

Kudos to JVC for merging the Hi-Fi crowd with the iPod crowd. The next time I want to purchase a new Hi-Fi, I know exactly where to go. Of course, I can’t remember the last time in this decade that I was in the market for a Hi-Fi. It is amazing how times have changed.

NEC new high-end 24-inch MultiSync monitors

NEC new high-end 24-inch MultiSync monitors

NEC's offerings or as jaw-dropping as some others, but the company's new MultiSync LCD2490WUXi² and LCD2490W2-BK-SV displays will no doubt be just the ticket for at least a few graphics professionals out there. From the looks of it, the two 24-inch monitors are mostly identical, and pack an IPS panel with a 1,900 x 1,200 resolution, along with a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 320 cd/m² brightness, 96.7% coverage of the sRGB color space, and NEC's AmbiBright ambient light sensor with automatic backlight adjustment. The big difference is that the LCD2490W2 model comes bundled with NEC's SpectraView color calibration sensor and, of course, a slightly higher price tag. Look for it to run you $1,299, while the SpectraView-less LCD2490WUXi² will set you back $1,099.

A-DATA's the slimmest portable HDD this world

Now, A-DATA's claims that its NH92 is indeed the slimmest portable HDD this world has ever seen. Still, with a case that's just 12 millimeters thick and 5.36 ounces, we'd wager that this one won't be weighing you down. The all-aluminum chassis contains a single 2.5-inch drive ranging from 250GB to 500GB in size, comes in the delightful array of colors you see pictured above and sports heretofore undisclosed prices.

Sanyo SCP-2700 from Sprint

Sanyo SCP-2700 from Sprint

The Sanyo SCP-2700 will come with a 2.2″ color LCD display that isn’t touchscreen - now isn’t that a welcome change from the slew of touchscreen handsets that have been making their way across markets all over the world lately? Well, call it old technology, but it does have its niche. The compact candybar handset will feature its own QWERTY keyboard to help you get those text messages and email out in double quick time. Not only that, it will cater to either gender with Impulsive Pink and Deep Blue colors, and with threaded text messaging, it will be much easier to keep track of your conversations each time an email or text message comes in. For folks who can’t live with emoticons, there is a dedicated emoticon key that makes it a snap to insert smiley faces and other symbols into their text messages and emails.

Heck, to make the entire graduation a much more fun affair, why not purchase two SCP-2700’s for free (both mom and daughter can get one apiece to help them keep in touch about the latest in fashion as well as boyfriend advice across a long distance once the “little girl” grows up and leaves the nest) as long as they’re new-line activations and tied down to a two-year service agreement on two Individual Plans with messaging, or a Family Plan with messaging.

Solar Panel Display Turn Table

Solar Panel Display Turn Table

The latest Lego creation or a signed action figure of some sort, your favorite items should get the special treatment. There may be little to no point to having a table that turns, but it makes you and your special items appear important. Plus it is sort of eco-friendly, after all it is solar powered.

Of course it’s not entirely eco-friendly, because it is you contributing to the creation of a pretty much pointless gadget that will eventually end up in the local dump. However, it’s solar powered, so for those that don’t question when someone calls something eco-friendly, it’ll fool them in a heartbeat. It comes in three different colors, black, silver and white. It has a total of four solar panels that keep it spinning.

HD Pocket camcorder has projector built on it

HD Pocket camcorder

HD Pocket camcorders shooting 720p when word comes of a model that has a Pico projector built in for instant projection of home movies. Yeah, that’s right, now you can shoot vacation videos and bore your friends in real time by projecting them anywhere!

Digilife is the same of the company and their new DDV-JF1 shoots 720p at 30 frames per second, or 848×480 at 60 fps, or postage sized 320×240 at 30 fps. Video which can be watched on its 2 ½ inch LCD screen or by the 640×260 pico projector. The Pico Projector first made headlines in 2006 and was heralded as an ideal business option for smart phones and pocket presentations while on the road. But this is the first time we’ve seen it as an option for a camcorder. And there’s a good reason for that. Battery life. The Pico Projection option will kill batteries of an average pocket camcorder in nothing flat, and with a size of 640×260, you won’t be watching movies on a sheet hung on the wall any time soon. Still though, it’s an awesome idea that could catch on if the power and brightness issues can be addressed.

WiPC by BlueRadios Inc.

WiPC

WiPC? Because there is apparently a need for wireless mobile broadband devices, that’s why. Okay, that joke didn’t really work, but who wouldn’t want “access to Internet-based information and entertainment content as well as voice, data, and video communications”.

Of course, one of the limitations to the WiPC or any MID is that tiny screen to surf the net with. Fortunately, this WiPC has a high-resolution color liquid crystal micro display, and superior magnifying optics coupled with some video technology can create a “virtual 15 inch image”. I’m not certain how that is possible to enlarge that image of that size.

Still, you’ve got to admire the miniaturization process that BlueRadios has accomplished. According to the company president and CEO Mark Kramer, they have reduced a typical 5 pound laptop down to 3 ounces. Not bad.

This product will be available to “OEMs and large consumer electronics distributors with advanced operating systems such as Windows, Android, or Linux”. It can also support Bluetooth 3.5G, WiFi, and GPS.

The Coby MP3 Player with 1GB Flash Memory and Speaker System

Coby MP3 Player

The Coby MP3 Playerit offers a 1GB flash memory combined with a stereo speaker system. It’ll play MP3 and WMA music files. Although 1GB isn’t much, there are likely those out there that really don’t need something with a lot of storage. Plus the smaller drives are better for taking around with you to the gym or other places when you need extreme portability. It doesn’t come with a set of earbuds, but at least you’ll have a set of speakers. The speakers can hook up to anything with a 3.5mm stereo plug.

Best Buy to Sell Palm Pre Phones Starting with June 7

Palm Pre Phones

It looks like Palm’s Pre will be available from Best Buy starting with June 7. Should we all just assume that Sprint will also start selling the device around the same date? As for the prices, word on the street is that Best Buy will sell the Pre for $199.99 for new customers when they choose a 2-year plan, $299.99 for upgrades and an astounding $999.99 for unsubsidized phones. We’ll just have to wait and see if anyone will confirm all that!

Olympus SP-565UZ 10MP Digital Camera with 20x Optical Dual Image Stabilized Zoom

Olympus has given the SP-570 UZ – the world’s most powerful ultra zoom digital camera – an extreme makeover by creating the new SP-565 Ultra Zoom, a smaller and lighter version with the same amazing precision-crafted 20x wide-angle telephoto zoom lens (26-520mm equivalent), but the ease-of-use of a point-and-shoot camera. Photographers searching for an even more portable and approachable ultra zoom to take anywhere will rejoice in the camera’s new form factor, and with 10 million pixels and Dual Image Stabilization delivering superior, virtually blur-free images, the SP-565 UZ is proof that good things do come in small packages.

The camera’s enhanced Face Detection can now track up to 16 faces within the frame and optimize exposure even when subjects are moving, ensuring that family reunion group portraits will come out well-focused. In addition, the SP-565 UZ ensures sharp, brilliant images with a host of other features:

* Dual Image Stabilization combines the benefits of Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization and Digital Image Stabilization to compensate for both camera shake and moving subjects, helping to create beautiful, virtually blur-free images in any situation;
* Shadow Adjustment Technology enables users to preview and capture images as the human eye sees them, compensating for difficult lighting situations and maintaining detail in highlights while improving detail in the shadows to produce more balanced photos; and
* Perfect Shot Preview takes the guesswork out of great photography by allowing users to preview and select various photographic effects live on the LCD screen, before snapping the shot.

SP-565UZ Highlights

Lightening the Lens Load
Lugging a bag full of lenses can slow traveling photographers down, so the SP-565 UZ comes fully equipped with the equivalent of three lenses in one complete camera. The bright, f2.8-4.5 lens provides the equivalent of 26-520mm focal length with 100x total seamless zoom (5x digital zoom). By using the toggle lever with one finger, users can get close to the action with the versatile yet compact 20x super telephoto zoom, while the wide-angle (26mm) lens captures more of the subject in each frame. Its super-macro capabilities capture the subtlest details from as close as one centimeter. The compact lens construction combines aspherical and extra-dispersion (ED) lens elements to deliver edge-to-edge sharpness and clarity. Whether you’re hiking through the mountains or shooting a tennis match, this sturdy compact body with wide-angle and telephoto lenses provide the versatility to get the job done.

Dual Image Stabilization
Dual Image Stabilization enables users to take crisp, clear pictures in virtually any shooting situation – adjusting for camera shake and a moving subject. Olympus’ mechanical Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization keeps images sharp by adjusting the CCD to compensate for camera shake, which often occurs when zooming in on your subject and in low-light conditions when shutter speeds are slower. Digital Image Stabilization freezes the action with high ISO sensitivity and fast shutter speeds that help to prevent blur caused by a moving subject.

Face Detection
Face Detection tracks up to 16 faces within the frame and automatically focuses (Face Detection AF) and optimizes exposure (Face Detection AE) quickly for sharp, brilliant portrait pictures. Now, your subject’s face is in focus whether it is in the center of the target area or not.

Manual Controls
The Manual, Aperture Priority and Shutter Speed Priority modes give users versatility and control for optimal performance in any situation. Users can express their creative vision – adjusting the f-stop for detailed portraits with softened backgrounds, or slowing the exposure speed to create the blurred effect of motion, or just sit back and let the camera do the thinking through the use of the automatic settings.

High-Speed Sequential Shooting and Pre-Capture
The SP-565 UZ is capable of capturing images at an incredible 13.5 frames per second (with a reduced image size of 3 megapixels). The inclusion of Pre-Capture technology, which works in conjunction with High-Speed Sequential Shooting, enables users to capture the action before and after fully pressing the shutter button. Pre-Capture begins working as soon as the focus is locked, automatically archiving 10 frames in the camera’s buffer memory prior to the shutter release – virtually guaranteeing that none of the action will be missed even if the user’s reaction time is slow. Perfect for situations where timing is essential, such as photographing a tennis player serving, children playing or a whale breaching.

Shadow Adjustment Technology
Shooting outdoors in bright daylight can be tricky because of the extreme contrast between dark shadowed areas and bright sunlight areas. While the human eye is capable of detecting the nuances between dark and light and all the details in between, image sensors traditionally have not been quite as sensitive. The SP-565 UZ addresses this challenge head-on with a new Shadow Adjustment Technology, which compensates for extreme contrast where the shadow areas are underexposed and lack visible detail. With the new technology, users can preview and capture images that have the same contrast as seen with the naked eye.

Perfect Shot Preview
The SP-565 UZ features a Perfect Shot Preview mode that enables users to preview and select various photographic effects (such as zoom, exposure compensation, white balance and metering) on a live, multi-window screen before snapping the shot. Perfect Shot Preview enables users to see precisely what the image will look like when adjustments are made, ensuring users are capturing the exact image they want. It is an ideal way for novice users to learn about the effects of different photography techniques.

Perfect Fix In-Camera Editing
Olympus’ Perfect Fix feature offers quick solutions for unanticipated image quality issues, which may be caused by several adverse conditions. Lighting Fix can be used to adjust any underexposed areas and Red-Eye Fix can be used to reduce the effects of red-eye sometimes caused by a direct flash. Additional in-camera editing functions can be quickly accessed right in the camera by the touch of a button; features available include resizing, trimming, black and white, and sepia.

TruePic III Image Processor
Olympus’ enhanced TruePic III Image Processor produces crystal clear photos using all the pixel information for each image to deliver superior picture quality with more accurate colors, true-to-life flesh tones and faster processing speeds. TruePic III also captures sharp images at high ISO settings, which are traditionally associated with increasing image noise or producing grainy photos.

33 Shooting Modes Including Multi-Fireworks
The SP-565 UZ makes it easy to take great photos in a variety of scenarios and lighting situations with 33 shooting modes, including a Multi-Fireworks mode. To capture the most stunning fireworks displays, this multi-exposure feature overlays the fireworks to create the memory of a lifetime. To activate any of the camera’s pre-set modes, simply select the desired mode for portraits, landscapes, night scenes, fast-action and more.

Versatile Memory
All Olympus digital point-and-shoot cameras accept xD-Picture Card media. The SP-565 UZ will also come equipped with an adapter, which will enable microSD memory cards to be used when capturing images. The microSD cards are emerging in consumer electronic devices, including mobile phones and PDAs. Users can also easily display photos on their HDTVs.

Olympus Master 2 Software
Olympus Master 2 software provides the ultimate in digital imaging management. An intuitive user interface makes downloading to your computer quick and simple, and images are easily organized by folders or albums and searchable by date in Calendar view. Also, with one-click editing tools, such as red-eye removal, images can be touched up before printing or e-mailing. Online support, templates, firmware upgrades and other user services are just a mouse-click away. Use the optional muvee Theater Pack to create professional quality slide shows and DVDs from your pictures using any of several built-in templates.

Nokia 5800 magically starts working on 3G

Nokia 5800

Olde NAM 5800 XpressMusic today, and the weirdest thing happened: it worked on 3G. This comes after a day of frustration trying to get it hooked up to UMTS yesterday -- a sentiment echoed by several others who took the plunge. The only theory we can come up with is that we were in Chicago yesterday at the Nokia flagship store -- a place where many of the "defective" units were sold -- and today we're elsewhere, so it's conceivable that there's an issue with AT&T's 3G network in Chicago. We've noticed an uptick in 3G loss on other devices in Chicago the past few days, so it's possible that the 5800 is just particularly sensitive to crappy networks; then again, there seem to be others in New York that have the same issue, so it's anybody's guess. All we know for sure is that we're showing a big, fat "3.5G" logo in the upper left corner of our unit at the moment -- and we're going to cross our fingers that it stays that way.

Dell Latitude XT2

Dell Latitude XT2
Dell's Latitude XT2 convertible was leaked to us way back in March, and although it missed that planned November ship date, it's suddenly showed up in an absolute downpour of documentation -- great news if you didn't have any light reading for the weekend. We did a nice heavy skimming of the material for you, and spec-wise, it's basically just the expected bump up to Montevina: an unspecified ULV Core 2 Duo on an 800MHz bus with integrated Intel GMA X4500 graphics, up to 5GB of DDR3 RAM and the same 12.1-inch multitouch-capable capacitive touchscreen as in the original. (Hellooo Windows 7!)

Alesis iPod JamDock

Alesis iPod JamDock

The pro audio-minded rack mixer, and the ProTrack dock / portable digital recorder, you'd think they'd have all their bases covered -- but that's clearly not the case. Among the many goodies making the scene at this year's NAMM, JamDock is aimed at musicians who want to incorporate iPod audio into their performance.

This bad boy sports two 1/4-inch inputs that support both line level and high impedance instruments, 1/4-inch monitor outs, and a single 1/4-inch stereo out for headphones. It can be mounted on a drum rack or stand using the e-percussion Module Mount (sold separately). Pricing and availability have yet to be announced. In the meantime, it looks like bedroom musicians will be stuck jamming to the Miami Vice theme on their boomboxes, just like nature intended.
